HRM Igwe, Amb. Dr. Lawrence Okolio Chikezie Agubuzu
His Majesty Igwe, Ambassador Dr. Lawrence Okolio Chikezie Agubuzu, was born at Awene Village of Ezema Olo, Ezeagu Local Government Area, Enugu State, Nigeria, on 27th October, 1942.
Passing out of Saint Joseph’s Primary School, Olo town, in 1955, at the top of his class, he very early set a high standard of brilliance, excellence and hard work that has been his lifelong benchmark as a Primary School Teacher in the early 1960s; an undergraduate at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka from where he graduated as the best student and prize winner in Political Science, in 1967; a post-graduate student at the University of Lagos (1980-1981); Howard University in Washington, DC, (1982-1984); the University of Besancon in France (1987); a Foreign Service Officer (1971-1996); a Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Matters, 1984-1986, in the old Anambra State; an Ambassador of Nigeria to the United Nations in New York with the portfolio of Deputy Permanent Representative, (1989-1991); High Commissioner (Ambassador) of Nigeria to Zambia with concurrent accreditation to Malawi from 1991-1999; Assistant Secretary-General of the defunct Organization of African Unity (OAU)/Commissioner of the African Union (AU) 1999-2003; Traditional Ruler of Ezema Olo Kingdom since 2006; Chairman, Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers, 2013-2023; South East Delegate to the National Conference 2014; First Chancellor, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) 2015-2021; First Chancellor, Federal University of Kashere (FUK), Gombe State, 2021 to date; Chairman, South East Council of Traditional Rulers, 1st August 2022-to date.
Igwe Ambassador Agubuzu has held a number of ad hoc responsibilities, including:
- Member, Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions (ACABQ) of the United Nations 1989-1991.
- Dean of the Diplomatic Corp in Zambia, 1997-1999.
- Founder of the OAU/AU Pan-African Tse-Tse and Trypanosomiasis Eradication Campaign (PATTEC), 2000.
- Chairman Non-aligned Movement (NAM) Group’s Sub-Committee on the pre-independence Namibian elections between October and November 1989.
- Member, Commonwealth Group of Ambassadors at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, 1989-1991.
- Member, African Ambassadors Group at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, 1989-1991.
- Member, Commonwealth Ambassador Group at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in 1989-1991
- Member, Commonwealth Observer Team to the first democratic election to Mozambique in 1998.
- Member, Enugu State Security Council, 2013 to 2023
- Member, Enugu State Boundary Committee, 2013 to 2023
- Co-Chairman, Enugu State Community Policing Advisory Committee, 2020 to date;
- Member, Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the killing of HRH Igwe Emmanuel Chidiebere Mba of Oruku Community in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, on the 26th Day of December 2020, April 2021.
- Member, Enugu State Steering Committee on Gender-Based Violence, May 2021 to date
- Chairman, South East Traditional Rulers Committee on Primary Health Care Delivery, 16th September 2022 to date.
Ambassador Agubuzu was internationally recognized and listed in Africa Who’s Who, page 98, second Edition 1991, published by Africa Books Ltd, London, United Kingdom as well as in WHO’s WHO IN THE COMMONWEALTH during the same period.
A family man per excellence, Igwe Ambassador Lawrence Agubuzu is happily married to Lolo Patricia Onuegbunam Agubuzu (LSM). The marriage is blessed with children and grandchildren.
He is a Catholic Knight of St. Mulumba (KSM) and a Recipient of the National Honours of OON and CFR.
